My brief for composing 'Miniature Overture' [or 'Scale Model'] was to 'write something fast'. Having established that this meant something in a quick tempo for players of limited experience rather than ' we need it tomorrow', I set to work, using scales in easy keys and positions [for string players] as a basis. I give two tempo indications at the start. The first is the slowest speed in which the piece still sounds fast, while the second is a 'go for broke' tempo intended for professional groups who might want to use the piece as an encore.
